Kinesio Taping

Kinesio is one of the fastest growing techniques being used within health professions, with over 1200 conditions identified as being suitable for treatment using Kinesio Tape.

Kinesio taping was developed by Japanese chiropractor Kenso Kase in the 1970s as a method of assisting physical treatment of damaged tissue while maintaining the full range of motion, unlike traditional taping methods, which restrict movement.

Kinesio tape first gained widespread attention at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where 50,000 rolls were donated to 58 countries, giving the product exposure on the world stage. Since then, high-profile athletes such as Rory Mcllory and David Beckham have popularised use of the tape, and it can now be regularly seen at many high-profile sporting events, for example the London 2012 Olympics and European Football Championships.

The precise mechanism of how the tape works is ultimately unproven. The tape is said to lift the epidermis as it recoils after being applied with tension. This 'lifting' increases space between the skin and the underlying connective tissues, vessels and muscles to improve mobility and aid lymphatic and venous movement. The 'lifting' also has an effect on underlying fascia, reducing pain, decreasing susceptibility to microtrauma and improving muscle performance. Kinesio Tape can also be used to increase joint stability.

Since trialling Kinesio Tape at the Studio we have found that it can have an almost magical effect in alleviating aches and pains. Do talk to Anne about whether it could help you.

this article is written with the help of a client who came to The Studio with tennis elbow type of injury.

The tape is available to the general public from a number of retail outlets. However, we have found that correct application is vital to getting any beneficial result. Anne says that even after a year of using the tape she is still learning what does and doesn't work.
